MICAYLA GRACE
MUSICIAN

Our Valentine's girl crush this year is Micayla Grace, a dear friend, amazing bass player, vegan and animal rescuer. When she's not on tour playing bass for the likes of Albert Hammond, Jr. (the Strokes), or formerly for punk band Bleached and Charli XCX, she's at home in the California desert with her two rescue dogs, Buddy and Stu, and her longtime partner and fellow musician Jon Sortland (the Shins, Cigar, EV Kain). We asked Micayla for some rapid-fire romantic inspiration, and she kindly obliged.

THE MOST ROMANTIC THING?

A compilation tape from a boy I had a crush on when I was 16.  His hands were shaking when he gave it to me.  I listened to that tape obsessively, decoding all the secret love messages.  My heart still skips a beat when I hear any of the songs that were on it. One of them was "Love Comes Quickly" by the Pet Shop Boys.

THE CRAZIEST THING I'VE DONE FOR LOVE IS...

Made a secret plan to run off to San Francisco to be with the man I have been with for the last 16 years!

SECRETLY I'M CRUSHING ON...

My BF.

VALENTINE'S DAY PLANS?

Going to Palm Springs to have a date night at the Parker Hotel with my sweetie.

ALWAYS ON MY BEDSIDE TABLE:

Always a candle and fresh flowers. The "JT Campfire" candle by Joshua Tree Candles is my favorite right now. You would never expect "campfire" to smell so amazing.

FAVORITE SOUNDTRACK FOR ROMANCE?

Nick Drake, Pink Moon.

BEDTIME RITUALS?

If I'm getting into bed mode, I love a hot shower, scented lotion, candle light, cozy pajamas, a cup of chamomile tea, some stretches and a snuggle with my puppies before the lights go out. I've also been really into drawing an Animal Spirit card lately. They have animal archetypes to offer insight into relationships, personalities, behaviors and habits. When a specific card is drawn, advice is given on how to bring the animal card energy into balance in your life, such as "pack your bags and go on an adventure," or "do a creative project."
